Immersed Within the Clouds
(Germany x Reader)

Chapter 7:

Gilbert's eyes widened considerably as he watched his brother embrace their prisoner. If someone was going to break any rules, he was almost positive it was going to be himself. He was going to intervene when he noticed a content grin ghost itself across his brother's face. Gilbert relaxed his position so that he could rest his arm and head comfortably while the other leg lay straight against the ground before he exhaled a light sigh.

"Who would I be to take away your happiness, West?" Gilbert whispered with a smirk and a soft shake of his head. He hasn't seen a smile on his baby brother's face in years - despite all his attempts with his 'awesome' jokes.

Gilbert gave the two their moment as he started a fire and prepared the fish on three different sticks. Ludwig hoisted you from the ground and supported you as you strode to Gilbert's spot. He was seated comfortably beside a small fire, gazing into the glowing embers silently with a genuine smile. Ludwig gingerly laid you onto the dirt clad ground before shooting Gilbert a slightly disturbed expression.

"Gilbert," Ludwig called to his older brother. “Are you alright?

Gilbert glanced from his brother to you and back several times before bursting into an uncontrollable fit of laughter at the strange glances he had received. Ludwig rolled his eyes with a huff and deemed his brother normal once more – or the closest he had actually ever been to normal. While you and Ludwig dove hungrily into the first meal in a while, Gilbert was starting to catch his breath.

”So what should the awesome me be calling mein future sister-in-law?” He smirked devilishly as he casually let the words flick off his tongue. Both you and Ludwig choked for a few minutes while Gilbert watched with an amused glint within his ruby irises.

What the hell?!” Ludwig roared while his cheek betrayed him with a flustered blushed. You coughed while you were covered in an identical color. You couldn't contain your laughter as Ludwig began to chase after Gilbert with a long string of German curses flowing from his mouth in his habitual assertive tone.

Although you were unable to decipher the majority of what was being thrown back and forth, you could tell that Gilbert was teasing Ludwig while he responded with a hefty threat. Before too much time had passed, the robust German captured his older brother in a head lock while he struggled to elude the tight hold. Ludwig finally noticed your erupting laughter and glanced towards your direction.

The entire picture brought a light flush to his face until a breeze swept through and you viciously shivered tugging the thin sheet closer to your goosebump infested skin. His grasp loosened considerably as his attention was deprived of the struggling Prussian. Gilbert immediately took advantage and flipped the position so Ludwig's head rested uncomfortably above the pale skinned elbow as he roared a victorious series of laughter.

”You’re losing your touch, West!” Gilbert sneered. Ludwig released an irritated sigh before seizing hold of the Prussian’s bicep and hoisted him over his head and onto the hard ground. He paid no mind to the groaning albino as he strode beside you and sighed.

"You will catch a cold if you stay in that." He murmured motioning to your soaking flight suit and clothing. His brow furrowed as he thought for a moment in what to use for temporary clothing. The trio couldn't be too far from the nearest base; at most it was probably a few more miles.

"I-I'll be f-f-fi-ne." You managed through chattering teeth. There was no way you were going to undress around either of these two, let alone walk to a flight base in only your undergarments. Ludwig noticed his leather flight jacket from his peripheral vision lying on the ground. He had already removed his own wet clothes and replaced it with his flight suit, but had neglected to replace the jacket. Perhaps it would be long enough to hide everything and still be comfortable, and even if it isn't, just changing the top layer of would still help increasingly.

"Here," Ludwig had retrieved the article and handed it to you with pink cheeks. "Change into this."

Your own cheeks lit up as he averted his gaze. The jacket was rather heavy and radiated entrapped body heat which you, admittedly, yearned to cuddle in. With a huff, you carefully stood and found yourself hidden in vegetation not too far off. Ludwig's back was turned towards you, but you could see even from the current distance, his ears burning a bright scarlet. Fortunately, Gilbert was still sprawled out along the ground, so you didn't need to worry about him.

You easily unzipped the flight suit and let it slip from your bruised arms. The shirt beneath, however, proved a bit more difficult. As you lifted the thick fabric over your head, you released a loud hiss. You had been shot in the shoulder, and although it didn't do much damage or even travel too far, it still left an agonizing ache. You hadn't needed to move in a particular way which required too much of the joint; it was located on your inferior arm as well so there had never been too much stress on it.

"Are you alright?" Ludwig called over his shoulder when he heard the soft cry. You mustered out a soft, "Yes," but he wasn't convinced. He tried to contain his embarrassment as he approached the area he noticed you had travelled. You had flipped the shirt upwards and it covered your face as you struggled to remove it. Every other second would be interrupted with a groan or yelp which you failed to suppress.

Ludwig’s face had flushed while the heat was suffocating him. His head pounded from the sudden rush of blood to his head. While you struggled with the stubborn fabric article, Ludwig repeatedly opened and closed in mouth in a desperate attempt to force something out, but instead it resulted in him poorly mocking a fish. With a loud huff, you began to lower the shirt back down. Ludwig panicked and quickly searched for an exit, but found himself frozen to the spot. When the shirt was placed back into its original position, your eyes locked with his wide crystal blue ones. The silence surrounding the little hidden area was growing thicker by each passing second. The corner of your mouth twitched slightly in apprehension.

”You pervert!” You finally exclaimed causing him to flinch in surprise. You stepped forward and shoved the unsuspecting German roughly into the dry leaves and weeds which scattered the forest floor. The action used both of your arm’s full ability so your arm quickly retaliated with a quick message from the sensitive nerves to your brain in a long shooting feeling of pain. You leaned against a nearby tree and latched your dominant hand to your injured shoulder with a low groan. Ludwig stood immediately with a surprised call of your name.

”Are you okay?” He tried to pry your hand away to inspect the injury. You unwillingly allowed him access to the sensitive area where his brow furrowed in concentration at the wound and swelling red skin surrounding it. When he turned his attention back to you, his eyes refused to meet your narrowed glare.

”I’m sorry. I was worried something was wrong.” He muttered turning away in shame.

”Why are you so kind to me? If we were normal soldiers one of us would be dead by now and yet- I know you said you need me for proof or something, but –“ You trailed off hoping he understood what you meant. He sighed and turned to meet the soft gaze you had thrown at his back. His pale hand found itself running through his hair in thought before resting lazily on his neck.

”I don’t know. I know it’s wrong – but something in me doesn't want to believe that. Maybe I feel like this to spite my brother, but it – doesn’t feel like that’s why. In all actuality, your guess is as good as mine.” He mused as he found himself stepping closer to you as you copied his actions. The comfortable distance had an indescribable aura sweeping through along with the occasional breeze. “Although, I guess I could ask you the same thing. You saved both my brother and me.”

You nodded letting the information sink in. As another silence settled, you felt yourself begin to tremble again. Ludwig noticed with a slight frown until you glanced back into his captivating eyes with a blush. You forced yourself to swallow all of your pride before slowly managing to ask him a question.

”C-could you help me?” You motioned to the jacket and averted your gaze. Ludwig tensed up, but nodded anyway.

He took another step forward and hesitantly grasped the hem of the shirt and lifted it upwards. He turned his head, but couldn’t help to peek a bit – in order to make sure he wasn’t hurting you, of course! (Sure~)

”What are you guys doing over here? You’ve been gone for – Whoa –“ Gilbert had approached the couple at the wrong moment, but cackled his unique laughter nonetheless. Ludwig whipped around faster than the albino could react and – well, let’s just say he was taken care of.

Both Ludwig and Gilbert claimed that the flight base was not too much farther as they noticed an increase of jets and fighters overhead. Gilbert made sure to keep his distance from you and his younger brother after the little run in, so he was much farther ahead. You had to stifle a laugh every time Gilbert winced from his newly acquired injuries.  Serves him right! He had the nerve to catcall and poke fun at the situation he had been caught in while being chased and attacked by both you and the embarrassed German.

I can see the base right over here, brother!” Gilbert called sprinting towards the camp. Ludwig seemed to grow tense once more, but immediately relaxed when he caught your gaze. Fear flooded your stomach and soon branched outwards to the rest of your body. Your steps began to weigh themselves down with dread as thoughts of facing an entire squad, let alone several squads of enemies who wouldn’t give a second thought to ending your life.

”What’s wrong?” Ludwig whispered with a bit of concern lacing his words. You gulped and turned to him as your mouth grew dry.

”There’s an entire base of people who want to kill me and I’m about to throw myself into the middle of it.” You squeezed your eyes shut and reopened them before continuing to shuffle forward. Ludwig's mouth pressed into a thin, hard line. He admired the bravery and yet his mind began to wonder why you continued to march forward if this conclusion had infested your mind.

When the trio entered the base, they were greeted by a squadron leader who wore his dress attire and two SS soldiers following closely behind. All three stood rigid in a frozen stature at the stoic expressions the SS wore. The squadron leader, meanwhile, held a suppressed grimace behind a polite grin. He, like most other pilots, was not too keen of this branch of their failing government.

"Good evening," The leader began with a curious glance at you. "Might I ask your business here?"

Ludwig spared a glance at his absent minded brother and you fidgeting nervously.

"For a - request." Ludwig decided slowly as the SS soldiers eyed him suspiciously.

"Dressed like that?" One had boldly spoken up tilting his head slightly back for a better observation of the trio adorned in filth infested, tattered flight suits.

"I'd like to discuss the matter privately - if you don't mind that is." Ludwig shrugged the comment aside and made eye contact with the squadron leader. Before either SS soldiers could respond, the pilot answered first.

"Naturally," He responded waving off the dumbstruck soldiers. They stayed behind, but didn't neglect to shoot a malicious warning glare in their direction.

The group made their way to the squadron leader's office who seated himself at his desk. It was silent for quite a bit before Ludwig coughed into his hand awkwardly.

"Sir," Gilbert finally called to attention with a professional tone. "We are here to request permission for a plane."

"No," His answer was blunt yet absolutely sure. It shocked the brothers in the straightforwardness of his decision.

But sir-

We don’t have enough resources or planes as it is and I haven’t even the slightest notion who the three of you all are. If you don’t mind I have plenty to deal with at the current moment and dealing with a few pilots who lost their way is not something I wish to waste my time with.” His voice was clipped with irritation and frustration was evident on his brow as he removed his worn crush cap. He fell back into his chair with a sigh trying to drown out the world if only for a few seconds.

Ludwig was silent in thought while Gilbert shook his head in confusion. This man was a Colonel and didn’t know who neither he nor his brother were. Most military officials were required to be familiar with both the representation of Germany and Prussia and yet - The desperation for new pilots must have grown rather incredulously to not be aware of information which was dire in the middle of a war.

Colonel. You may know my brother and I as Prussia and Germany,” Ludwig held a strong assertive tone which almost gave an impression of the blonde scolding the now astonished leader. His head snapped forward before he immediately stood and saluted them with a right hand resting just above his brow. “At ease.

I’m so sorry, General Beilschmidt. You don’t look anything like the photos we had received – not to mention you-” He began to explained hastily. It was true that all three of them were covered in dirt and ash while many had never seen Ludwig without his hair slicked back.

I’m afraid you’re mistaken. I am not a General – for the Luftwaffe that is.

You were reported dead, sir. The Fuehrer promoted you for your sacrifice to the war.”  He stated slowly and cautiously.

And what about the awesome me?” Gilbert inquired with a pout. The leader only eyed him before averting his gaze. Ludwig stopped him before he could create a ruckus.

What of Lutz?” Ludwig wondered aloud.

He is Goering’s right hand man. He now helps in all decisions for the Luftwaffe and sends all of these SS soldiers here,” He clipped with contempt.  “If you don’t mind my asking, who is the young woman?

She is to be transported to my base as soon as possible. Now – might we acquire a plane?” The Colonel chewed his lip for a few moments until he released an exasperated sigh.

I am forbidden from releasing weaponry such as plane without forms signed by an official and my squadron needs as many of them as possible especially now. The Allies have been increasing their attacks tenfold, ” He reasoned until he leaned forward and whispered. “However, it wouldn’t be too bad if a kubelwagen were to go missing. There are around seven placed just on the outskirts of the base - Be careful, General.

The squadron leader stood and saluted the trio before briskly striding out of the building. Ludwig spared a glance at the pouting albino and perplexed woman before him. The kubelwagen would most definitely prove to be more satisfactory than another trek on foot.

With a few more moments of thought, he led them all to the warehouse. As the Colonel had said, there were a few kubelwagens behind the plane housing building, but it seemed a few were in use as there were only four present. Gilbert grinned giddily before claiming loudly, “I call driving!” It wouldn’t be too long before they all were back at their squadron’s base.

(A/N: When text is in bold it means they are speaking German. I thought it would be easier than putting it in German and translating it later.)
