The Hero or the Villain
(America x Reader x 2p!America)
End 2

"It's either me or-"

"Me." Allen stepped forward and daring Alfred to make another move silently. They both began lowly spitting insults towards one another before you retracted your arms and backed away from their battlefield. Their fire grew large with violent gesticulations and crude gestures to aid their derogatory remarks. Tears filled your eyes as you took in the horrible scene.

Before you could even process your actions, you took off through the both of them and the vegetation. Your feet padded against the dirt road in an attempt to escape the burning fires of hatred between the two men who had your heart so divided.

You stealthily snuck away without the notice of either men until you stumbled over a ditch hidden in the grass. Alfred’s head shot up and eyes widened upon witnessing your tear stained face. Allen’s line of vision followed his and had the same reaction. You took off sprinting in order to avoid any more fighting between the two. If there was to be any blood-shed, then neither of them deserved you – or perhaps it was the years of bloody battle you had experienced that steered you away in fear of witnessing more.

Alfred ran through the foliage and mounted Allen’s motorcycle. He had never driven one before, but he decided he would look cool in one anyway. His actions slowed down as he daydreamed about how cool he’d look winning you over on a motorcycle. It wasn’t long before he was hauled off of the vehicle and onto the hard dirt road.

”Keep your hands off my bike.” Allen hissed boarding the motorcycle, strapping his bat to his back, and speeding off after you. Alfred groaned and stood now speeding after you as well on his own feet.

You cut through a forested area and searched for an appropriate hiding place. Allen was slightly behind, but Alfred was much farther. Allen turned around and sped straight past Alfred who slowed slightly upon seeing his change of course. Alfred kept going in his original direction when he caught a glimpse of you in between the trees.

Allen could see you sprinting through the trees and revved his engine in an attempt to catch your attention so you would see they were done fighting. His knuckles had turned white from his tight grip on his vehicle, and although he couldn’t see that through his gloves, he could feel the pain of such a hold.

He was worried – that much was obvious, but he was guilty as well. He knew of the wars of your past and how sensitive you were to them, but he acted out of passion; he felt like an idiot! Allen couldn’t stand the thought of your tear stained face and decided to stop being a pansy.

Before he could begin to rationalize his decision, he turned into the forested area and towards your figure retreating at a surprising rate. Rocks and dirt sputtered from beneath the tires, but the dips and small mounds distracted him with the awful driving terrain. His body was thrown back and forth, but his grasp on the handles kept him in place when you grew closer and closer.

An unsettling 'snap' drew his attention downward where he noticed the motorcycle chain lashing outwards as a result of breaking. It whipped against his leg she he released a yelp of pain and suddenly remove his hands from the handles. The chain flew back into the rear tire with an awful churning noise and a final screech before it tossed Allen off with no intention of sparing his life.

The landing snapped his legs and arm before the motorcycle toppled right over top of him. He couldn't suppress the screech of pain as his body was mangled by the immense weight which crushed his body and most likely crushed several ribs. As he wheezed, blood appeared from his mouth as he coughed.

Just as you were about to turn and check what had made such an awful, deafening noise, Alfred captured you in his arms. You pushed him away to settle upon the horror laying much too closely. You sprinted towards Allen with wide eyes and a pounding heart. What if that had killed him?!

The cry of pain contradicted the idea, but only increased your pace as you slid to a stop and kneeled at his side. Alfred chased after you and wore an astonished bearing as he immediately gripped the vehicle and hauled it off of his ‘competitor’. Allen spit out more blood and carefully pulled a few rocks that had imbedded themselves into his skin out.

”Allen – w-why?” You whispered seizing his hand as he chuckled attempting to squeeze your hand in a feeble grasp. He removed his fingers from your death-grip and carefully wiping his thumb across your cheek to collect a stray tear that had escaped. You hadn’t even noticed you started crying through the shock that surged through your veins.

”Don’t cry, doll. That’s the reason I came after you.” He gave a dry laugh before coughing out more claret liquid. His mind was fuzzy as his body gradually began to submerge into a hollow state to match the icy sheen sheathing him. Guilt panged in your heart as you realized acting out on a more rationalized whim would have prevented this.

”Alfred – Call for an ambulance and help me bring him closer to the road-“

”No.” Allen decided much to your surprise.

You drank in his mangled appearance where one of his legs had twisted in a most unnatural position revealing the red stained bone beneath his torn jeans. Allen’s arm appeared as though it had another joint while it bled profusely onto the grass just below him. The rusty nails decorating his weapon of choice pierced his back, digging deeply into the flesh making for an awful position. The burn from the motor along his torso leaving the skin raw and blistered, but he still held a bittersweet smile.

”D-dude-“ Alfred was unable to utter out anything else in complete confusion at the idiocy of Allen decision, which was saying something. You retrieved Allen’s cellphone from his pocket and lucky found it damaged, but still useable – or so you hoped. Alfred caught it when it was tossed in his direction while the both of you ignored Allen’s protests.

”We’re trying to help you. Why are you so against this?”

”Because I can’t go through this again!” He finally exploded trying to sit up, but falling back over with a yelp. You held him to the ground so he wouldn’t try something like that again – at least not until Alfred was off the phone and could assist you. You weren’t pushing on him as not to hurt him or affect the bat lodged in his back, but you had him trapped beneath you with your body. It was the only effective solution you had until you had an extra hand.

”What -are you talking about?” You knitted your brow as you painfully watched him writhe in discomfort and his frustrations.

”Doll – I-I lost you before and I don’t want to live if it means I’ll lose you a second time,” He averted his eyes in shame for showing a sensitive side. The water brimming on your eyes spilled over. “You don’t believe it was you, but – damn it – it was to me. I thought I was given a second chance and that gave me an opportunity to fix my life and do the right things another time around, but I should know by now. The villain always loses, doesn’t he?”

”No – No! Allen – you’re not a villain, not to me. You risked your life to keep me from crying! That is one of the – no – that is the sweetest thing anyone’s ever done for me. I’m sorry I’m the reason you-“ You couldn’t help but choke up once more as guilt consumed you.

Allen cupped your face within his hand and softly planted his lips against yours. You immediately pulled away due to the metallic taste of his blood. You couldn’t enjoy the action with the knowledge that he was dying and you could taste it, but Allen felt rejected and glanced to Alfred who was vehemently describing their location before ending the call.

”Go home,” Allen commanded dejectedly. You hesitated before opening your mouth to inquire on his sudden change in demeanor. “You don’t belong here anyway. I already fucked up with you. Mr. Hero over there deserves you more. Just – let me die in peace.”

”But –“

He smiled as widely as he could before submitting to the pain and losing consciousness. Alfred placed a hand on your shoulder with a somber glint in his eyes, but you refuse to meet his them.

”I’m sorry, dude. Come on.” Alfred carefully lifted Allen from the ground and wrenched the bat from his back resulting in a violent contraction of Allen’s muscles as a pained noise slipped through his teeth. He wasn’t going to make it at the rate he was losing blood.

You eventually made it to the side of the road where Alfred laid him gently onto the ground. He was truly displaying his hero side. You grasped Allen’s blood spotted hand when you knelt beside him and gingerly placed it against your cheek.

”I don’t mean to rush, but we need to go. Arthur’s waiting for us,” Alfred sheepishly rubbed the back of his neck as the toe of his shoe awkwardly pushed a small pebble along the road. “The ambulance knows where to go, so we don’t need to worry.”

”I can’t leave.”

”You – want to stay? But you barely know this guy –“

”He said he’d rather die than wake up and not have me here. He loves me – and I think I might be falling for him.” You admitted sweeping back his auburn hair and frowning at his the wounds which slightly marred his face.

”I – I love you.” Alfred knelt beside you gently caressing your cheek with doleful expression.

”No. Not in the way you think you do. I thought I loved you for over a century, but I – don’t. I was fooling myself and you are, too. You’ve even told me I’m like a sister to you,” You smiled softly at the irony. You had been waiting just over a hundred years for those words to leave his mouth, but now you were rejecting him. “You love me the same way you love you love your brothers.”

”I – just can’t lose you. You’re my best friend, my sidekick!” He admitted finally realizing you were right.

”I’m sure Arthur will figure something out again,” You softly planted a kiss on Alfred’s cheek when the siren of an ambulance resounded along with the muted lights behind hills as it climbed closer. “Good-bye Alfred. Your world needs a hero. Don’t keep them waiting.”

Alfred’s face quickly transitioned from a slight pink to a glowing ray of pride. He swiftly seized you into a firm embrace, but something wet damped your shoulder causing you to pull away. Alfred averted his eyes and wiped at them viciously like a child.

”I’ll miss you, dude.” He murmured stuffing your face back into his chest. You released a snort and agreed you would miss him as well. He left with a bittersweet smile just as the ambulance pulled over and strapped Allen in.

As you rode in the back of the ambulance, a warmth spread through your body and extremities in contrast to a slightly crestfallen expression. You lost a friend, but gained a lover – who coincidentally was the opposite of your best friend. You stroked Allen’s rough hand with your thumb while entwining and untwining your fingers as you promised to start a new life with him.

Allen slowly peeled his glued eyelids open to reveal his crimson jaded eyes. He haltingly peered the room, taking in the bland white walls with a muted, depressing pattern incrementally and the shiny metal medical instruments laying on a counter adjacent him. His eyes snapped open when he realized he was in a hospital and a dangerous fury began burning within him.

He finally noticed the bandages tightly wound around his injuries and the IVs piercing his skin supplying him with any fluids he required. He felt betrayed and abandoned, but only expressed it with a cluck of his tongue. He attempted to pull his hand upward and towards his opposite limb to remove the needles within him, but found it weighed down. A soft snore caught his attention as he cast his eyes downward at the girl slumbering beside him.

Your hand was laced with his and tucked beneath your cheek as you dreamt of something he’d never know. Allen carefully brushed away the hair hiding your face when his face dropped any expression it held before. You stirred at the foreign touch with fluttering eyelids and looked upwards curiously to match the gaze of Allen’s blank face.

”Allen! You’re awake!” You exclaimed releasing his hand and bounding forward to capture him into your arms. He was frozen in shock and wasn’t able to focus on the majority of what you had begun to ramble about – until you mentioned he’d been out for a week.

”What is happening?” He whispered to himself with no intention of receiving a reply.

”You were in an accident and I’m sorry, but your motorcycle didn’t make it,” You pulled back to look him in the eyes. He searched yours for any sign that he had died. “You’ve been out for a long time. Oh – I should call in the doctor!”

”You’re here.” He interrupted grasping your arm before you could escape. You nodded with a smile growing across your face.

”Yeah. I wanted to stay.” You admitted averting your eyes with a fluorescent blush. All of a sudden, you heard Allen adjusting himself in the bed and a few items clanking to the floor. He pulled you into the bed beside him despite your adamant protests as he did so.

”You can’t just remove the IV! We need to tell the doctor you’re okay!” You tried to persuade him and squirm out of the bed, but he placed his forehead against yours and silenced you with the intensity in his stare.

”I don’t care,” He chuckled brushing his lips across your forehead. You nuzzled into his chest when you relaxed in his embrace. “Thank you.”

”For what?” You glanced at his warm gaze.

”For trusting me enough to begin a new path in your life for me.” When he wasn’t so cocky, he was sort of a sweetheart.

”You nearly gave your life for me – that’s plenty enough to convince me.” You giggled pecking his lips. He pulled you in for a more passionate lip-lock in which his tongue decided to tease you. You parted and pecked his nose to avoid his hungry eyes.

”Allen – I think I’m falling for you.” He smirked before lifting you from the bed in his arms and pulling off the heart-monitor which released a long, obnoxious dead line and moving to leave.

”Where are we going?” You demanded with a pout as he further ignored any request for him to stay put. He smiled and glanced at the cute face he had witnessed hundreds of time before and answered without missing a beat.

”Home.”

Well, this was supposed to be done a little while ago, but better late than never, right?
